Christmas at Hyne Town House

As part of a full programme of Christmas entertainment, the choir of University of the Third Age joined with residents and staff at Hyne Town House to sing traditional carols and celebrate the festive season.

Once again the choir was in fantastic voice (as were some of the residents!)
and a wonderful time was had by all.

 Autumn Edition 2014

Sadly, summer has finally come to an end and with it the opportunity to get out and enjoy the warm weather. However, the weather this year was kind and gave residents plenty of opportunity to get into the garden and enjoy the spectacular sea views. Does anyone recognise the two lovely ladies in this photograph relaxing and taking the sun?

A special Day out

Resident Bill Knight, recently enjoyed a very special day as a VIP guest at the Dartmouth Regatta. Carer, Sue Hawke, wrote  to the Regatta committee to tell them about Bill’s career in the RAF. They enthusiastically invited Bill to come along to meet the Red arrows and he took great delight in watching the aerial display from the Boat Float. Afterwards he met members of the Red Arrows Team and was presented with a picture of the Red Arrows and a copy of their magazine signed by all the pilots.

A big thank you to Sue for organising  a memorable day for Bill and to her and Curtis for accompanying him on the day.

Christmas Shopping

Hard to believe I know, but our focus is now turning to Christmas!

We thought the residents’ families might like some additional ideas for Christmas presents and Jean has given me a shopping list of useful suggestions:

Bath robes, nightwear (it is advisable to get a size larger than normally worn as it is less intrusive when someone is helping them to dress) soap, toilet bags, costume jewellery and scarves. A portable DVD player with a favourite film or music is always popular as is a CD player with Talking Books or the resident’s favourite music.

Books of interest about a previous hobby, an area they lived or a person they admired. It is better if the book contains a small amount of text and lots of pictures.

What can be really beneficial, both for the residents and carers, are labelled multi picture photo frames or a digital photo frame. These provide a conversation point for the carer and visitor. Similarly a book containing messages and photos from the family, perhaps including drawings from grandchildren is a very personal gift.

A life history of the person, put together by the family, is a special gift as it provides many happy memories for the resident to be shared with carers and family alike.

Hyne Town House Newsletter
Spring 2014

Whilst I may be tempting providence, there is a distinctly “Spring-like” feel to the weather as I write this Newsletter. The sun is shining and the birds are busy building their nests in preparation of the new arrivals. Frankly, any respite from the incessant rain that we’ve been forced to endure throughout the winter is very welcome.
Let’s hope the summer is as warm and dry as the winter was cold and wet.
Welcome
We would like to extend a warm welcome to the following new residents who have joined us during the past couple of months:
Mary & Brian Phippen (Rooms 30 & 31)
Anne Bellis (Room 15)
We sincerely hope you will enjoy your stay with us.
Temple Dancing at Hyne Town House
Shrishti, a traditional dance troupe run by Nina Rajarani MBE, enthralled residents and staff of Hyne Town House with a gorgeous display of traditional Southern Indian dance called Bnaratanatyam.
Devicee and Jannavi, the two dancers, looked beautiful in their brightly coloured costumes and performed a traditional Jham which is an interaction between musicians and dancers. The ideology is to introduce movement to all parts of the body by gentle exercises and using Indian dance.
The troupe from Southern India are aware of how important music is to people with dementia and are visiting selected Care Homes to give something back to the community.
They performed three pieces and explained how they use the body through dance to tell a story. They were dressed as temple dancers and explained to the audience how they were married to god and stayed within the temple. They also showed the audience their jewellery which was typical of that worn by the temple dancers.
Hyne Town House residents thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the dance and one commented "I never thought I would be learning Indian dance at my age; but it's marvelous."
 The Big Bake
We are Holding a “ Big Bake “ at the Home on Thursday 17th April at 3pm in aid of Rowcroft, a local hospice which provides expert support to Hyne Town House with end of life care. The fabulous Great British Bake Off finalist, Glenn Cosby is supporting the Big Bake and encouraging others to get involved too:
It constantly astonishes me that hospice care is so dependent on voluntary income. I have seen at first hand the difference Rowcroft’s care and support makes to families and I am delighted to be part of this campaign. We all know what a fantastic job Rowcroft does, so what better excuse is there to get together, eat cake and raise some much-needed funds?!
Our wonderful Head Chef Michelle will bake delicious cakes to raise money for the charity. Local villagers, family and friends are all welcome to join in. Afternoon tea will also be provided. We do hope you can join us.
A copy of our busy schedule of events throughout the remainder of the Year is attached to this Newsletter.
Happy Birthday to you…

Gift Idea
At a recent coffee morning one of the residents took great pleasure in showing people a beautiful photo book which had been put together for her by her family. It is very easy for photo books to be obtained on the internet. They are a lovely gift and one which residents can show both staff and friends treasured pictures of family, pets, favourite places etc. They also provide an endless source of interesting conversation.
Contributions and photographs from Staff, residents and their families are always welcome.

Hyne Town House Newsletter

Winter 2014

Hyne Town House enjoyed a varied and fun-packed schedule of events leading up to Christmas. Judging by the comments of some of the residents both residents and their families much enjoyed the entertainment on offer.

Margaret said “It was the best Christmas she’d had. You couldn’t have done more. It was lovely “.

Another resident, who obviously enjoyed the delicious Christmas lunch stated “The food was better than a 5 star hotel”.

Steve and I would like to say a huge thank-you to Jean and all the staff for organising and co-ordinating such a wonderful festive season.

The Choir of U3A Entertain the Residents and their Families at the Christmas Carol Service

With the completion of the extension and refurbishment work, the Home has finally achieved the standard Steve and I always envisaged. We are both enormously proud of the end result and although refurbishments, renewals and upgrades will (and should) continue to take place I think we’ve seen the last of the builders for a while!!

The enlarged car park has prompted many favourable comments and, as the planting becomes established this summer, it should look even more welcoming.

Can we remind residents, their families and friends that private dining is available in the quiet lounge. The lounge is used for monthly meetings by The Stroke Association and if anyone else would like to use the room for a meeting or social event please speak to Jean.
